The Learn-o-Meter : a new way to track language learning progress
The Learn-o-Meter is a visual gauge which allows learners to measure their learning progress on a specific learning unit (a video-based lesson or a visual dictionary) according to four degrees of knowledge acquisition: Started, In Progress, Learned and Memorized. The goal is to reinforce the learner’s comprehension of the unit and to reach the level of repeat – but varied - exposure necessary for seen items to move from short-term to long-term memory. This progress tracking tool is complemented by a Coaching functionality which proposes new exercises to the learner depending on his or her past site activity, factoring in content unit scores obtained, diversity of learning units played, frequency of sessions, and other parameters.

A disruptive approach which breaks with traditional learning methods that have proven ineffective, the English Attack! approach is based on motivation and autonomous discovery of fun content.
The new site design and ergonomics reflect the English Attack! pedagogical philosophy, which puts the learner at the heart of the educational experience. Each learner who uses the site has the choice, according to his or her interests or needs, of following the Coaching recommendations or alternatively of choosing a different video lesson, visual dictionary, game or social activity from the thousands of possibilities (over 1,000 video lessons, 5,000 illustrated vocabulary items, 4,500 learning unit / game combinations) available on the site.
This process of autonomous discovery of authentic content by the learner is a fundamental characteristic of the English Attack! pedagogical approach, one that is in direct contrast to the obsolete linear lessons/chapters/levels structure typically found in textbooks integrating made-for-education content. The high frequency of site visits and learner time spent on English Attack! are the products of an alternative approach created by drawing from principles of cognitive neuroscience; best-practice EFL/ESL learnings; and modern gamification techniques. It is an approach aimed at increasing motivation; it features authentic content that is both attractive and very current ; it is structured around short sessions (typically 10 to 15 minutes per learning unit) ; and features a game-like motivational ecosystem rich in positive feedback and visual recognition of achievement (badges, points, evolution cards).

The English Attack! Freemium Model and Learning Units
Every Monday, English Attack! makes available – free of charge - one newly published video-based lesson (Video Booster), one visual dictionary (Photo Vocab), and a range of learning games associated with this free content. Access to the entire catalogue of learning units, with new units published daily, is reserved to Premium subscribers to the service. A capsule description of the learning units:
Video Boosters: a six-step exercise based on a current authentic video clip (films, TV series, music videos, and news items). The video clips are on average one minute long and the suite of language exercises built around them is fun and interactive.
Photo Vocabs : visual dictionaries on a wide range of themes and subjects. Each of the 12 to 20 vocabulary items in a Photo Vocab is illustrated, defined, used in a sample sentence, and includes an audio file for correct pronunciation.
Practice Games: these are designed around fun, familiar and casual game mechanics applied to the goal of long-term memorization of items seen in learning units. Game content is dynamically uploaded from the learning units associated with each game.
The social networking aspects of the site allow learners to comment on the site content and to practice their “social English” with other language learners from all over the world, increasing engagement, communicative self-confidence and motivation.
